While meditating this morning, the thought that surfaced was… we don’t pay attention to the pauses. It is the gap between these words that give meaning to this sentence, right? If there were no spaces, the words would just appear as a string of characters, as in a website address or email name. Similarly, there has to be a gap of a line space between paragraphs to move from one group of thoughts to another. I know that I would not be able to make sense of what is written if we did not have these spaces.
The same can be said of the way we live our lives. Continuous busy-ness without breaks surely does the same thing? That is probably why there is a pause between when we breathe in and breathe out to complete a cycle. When focussing on the breath the turning point between the inhalation and exhalation offers the experience of just Being. Then the action of taking in the next breath starts the next cycle of Doing-ness. Both are necessary to experience a complete cycle.
In ‘Jungle Book’, Baloo the Bear with his chilled out attitude singing ‘Bare necessities…” certainly had something when he sang “Do-Be-Do-Be-Do”.
I think our current global situation is pointing us to the ‘Be’ side of our life cycle, perhaps to take stock. I am taking Baloo the Bear’s example and quite happy to allow the river to ease me to the next port of doing and busy-ness!
