As a child I remember playing the board game “Snakes & Ladders”. It was so thrilling when I encountered a Ladder that allowed me to climb up and skip having to move along one square at a time. But it felt extremely disappointing when having to slide down a long and curving Snake! However when reaching the final square ahead of other players, I felt the elation of winning. The creators of this game must have come from a very high state of thinking, because to my mind it is such a brilliant reflection of our life’s journey!
I think that we come to this life as a way of extending our Soul’s experiences to enable us to grow and expand further. To allow this, we have to encounter challenges that give us an opportunity to think and figure things out. Sometimes we get it quickly and so move up the ladder to the next level. But, other times we need to repeat the challenge to gain more understanding from it. The level and depth of a challenge must reflect our capacity. I noticed that the initial snakes I came across on the board game were quite small. As I progressed further, the snakes became longer and the longest one was almost right at the top! Getting past this one always made me sigh with relief. However, there was still a little snake right at the top of the board which could still trip me up! The ladders were similarly placed. The longest ladder by-passed a lot of squares and with luck one could get to the last square quite quickly. This, though, fun for a short time, soon became boring. After all, the point of playing was to spend time getting entertained, not just keep winning.
Isn’t it very similar in our life’s journey? Overcoming the trials brings us much more fulfilment than achieving anything too easily. On the other hand, ladders provide a boost to our learning and understanding and enhance our experiences. I am beginning to realise that I am in no hurry to reach the end game. I would rather remain on the board for as long as is necessary to gather all that life has to teach and see it for what it is – to be played, enjoyed and remain immersed in.
What about the role of the Dice? I am rapidly coming to the understanding that there are no mistakes in life. Our soul directs our overall route. The experiences within that journey comes by the choices we make at every juncture. In other words, things don’t happen by chance but through synchronicity that is meant to help us learn the lessons we have preordained for ourselves. The power is in our hands.
