In a conversation I heard a friend say, ‘‘… but he has a good heart’.” My attention was caught by the implication that therefore, perhaps other important traits had been missing. In my estimation, showing respect, kindness, sensitivity and compassion are greater assets in a person’s character. We are more likely to hold someone in high esteem when these qualities are an inherent aspect of their personality. Then, perhaps a ‘good heart’ provides a solid foundation to build from.
I find that I have become sensitive to not only what people say, but how they say it. A good person with high morals and ethics though commendable, when they use it in judgement against another, becomes undesirable. When arrogant self-importance rules one’s action, our ego is the primary driver and this inflicts hurt and pain without our awareness.
When our thinking is disturbed and misplaced, it is unlikely that we will be considerate or even kind. Though regular effort is needed to become aware of our thoughts, it is a worthwhile step to develop, otherwise, a well-intentioned life with a good heart, becomes an unachievable goal. When we alter ourselves from within, we will see the change that we seek around us.
Well put !
