40. Becoming a Lighthouse

Lighthouses are fascinating. They stand alone in remote and often rocky places – their beam of light providing guiding passage to all who need a safe harbour. Some people behave like these lighthouses. They stand quiet and strong, lending their support wherever it is needed. How do they take on this role?

There are many professions that serve humanity. Very often, teachers come high on this list, who are well remembered for their positive influence on our lives. The care and service sector also have shining lights amongst them. It is true that these professions attract certain personality types. However, we all have an intrinsic capacity to shine bright in times of crisis. The last few years have brought forth many examples of courage, care and compassion. Our unique skills and talents can contribute in ways we are unaware of, to the greater whole, enhancing many lives.

When I reflect on my own contribution, the analogy to the lighthouse comes to mind. With my sight loss, I cannot actively charter the rough, dark seas helping in the rescue boats. But, at the very least, I could be the shining beam that lights up the choppy waters, allowing avoidance of the hidden dangers lurking underneath. My purpose then becomes a question of, how clear and far-reaching can I make my light? No doubt, this would be an endeavour for a lifetime! Imagine a world where millions more choose to brighten their light…
