51. Attentive Listening

Communicating clearly and to the point is a rare skill. Many of us layer our main meaning in umpteen words and sentences, painting images that have little relevance to the main point (as I have just done!). Hence, it takes concerted effort to listen, in order to pick up the correct message. Sadly, we tend to be very involved in our own thought processes that the truth is often missed.

Overhearing a patient describing their symptoms to a doctor, made me very aware that interrupting someone whilst they are talking can create incomplete communication. Quite a problematic situation if it results in a misdiagnosis! In reality, this can apply to almost any aspect in our lives, including attending to our own thoughts.

Too often the tape of self-talk that runs in our mind is critical of self and others. Yesterday, becoming aware of my anxiety for the day ahead, I tuned into my thoughts that had assumed a difficult time. Just by choosing a happier, kinder possibility unfolding, created an easy day in the end. Without giving attention and awareness to my thoughts the day could have left me quite tightly strung, making judgements and decisions from turmoil. Can it be this simple to change an outcome?
