70. Celebrating What Is

Recently, I had my annual specialist eye hospital appointment. After the usual acuity tests and back of the eye photographs, I asked my doctor if she could see any changes to my retina from the scans. I told her that I had found a slight improvement in the light levels in my right eye. She reminded me that as my visual field was the size of a pin-head, she could not see much detail to make a comment. Isn’t it amazing how with time, we can adjust to a loss and forget its impact? I found myself laughing at my own excitement, of this tiny perceived improvement that has given me much joy, though technically there was no difference!

The gap between how we see our current reality and what we would like it to be, is created solely by our response to an outer-stimuli. Feeling happy and at peace, can soon run into feeling dissatisfied by a negative opinion and judgement. The reverse is also true. By focusing on what is good in our surroundings can bring back the optimism that naturally exists within us. Marking each little achievement with a positive stroke, can soon create a long-term pattern of gratitude for all that is.

In my opinion, it is vitally important to preserve one’s inner peace. Making the effort to build this core of resilience, helps to avoid slipping into self-limitations. My belief that everything happens for a reason and always for our greater good, has encouraged me to appreciate what is already existing within my sphere. The power lies in how my mind perceives what is, which in turn influences my experience…
