73. Flicking a Switch

The nature of unconscious thoughts result in them flitting continuously around in our mind. These don’t even necessarily reflect the reality of the moment. Whilst at leisure, too often these thoughts take us way from our physical space in a blink. The big question would be whether we travel to a happier place or a more miserable one than we are occupying in that moment. This can be easily observable if we pay attention to the subsequent words and actions that follow these mind-movies. But, how many of us become aware of our own thoughts and resultant behaviour? If we did, then wouldn’t we have to become accountable for them!?

I have noticed that when unfocused in a moment, past experiences can come out to play for yet another encore in my mind-movie. It is theorised that by dwelling in the past for too long, one can attract a similar future. This confirms the ideology of ‘history repeating itself’. Perhaps using the same principle, we could conjure up a space of happier possibilities, if only we could monitor our thoughts

Doesn’t learning to become aware of the workings of our mind, which could help us to create a grander life, sound more appealing? This would be no different than being immersed in a virtual reality of our own making … just like turning on a console and flicking a switch to a film of our choice! Though this may sound simple, it initially requires vigilance, patience and continual practice. In this process, we may even develop the skill of living in the present moment! Sadly, our bodies respond to our long-term courting of misery, by crating ache, pain and sickness. In contrast, the happy and healthily fit people are the exemplars for the positive mind space they occupy for most of their lives. So, why not flick the switch? Indeed, we have always had control to create the future of our choice.
